Lesnar is returning from his latest bout with diverticulitis. When he steps into the cage with Overeem, he'll have been out of action for fourteen months. Lesnar last fought Cain Velasquez at UFC 121, dropping his heavyweight title after in the first round by TKO.Overeem defeated Fabricio Werdum by unanimous decision in the opening round of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix. The bout was largely uninspired, and, after turning down a date in September with Antonio Silva, Overeem was dropped from the tournament and released from Strikeforce.
